Why do I have long distance charges on my bill for calls I didn't make? If you find unexplainable long distance charges on your phone bill for calls you didn't make, you may have inadvertently downloaded a web dialer. Sometimes referred to as "Modem Hijacking," this is a serious security breach of your computer and it's important you take immediate action to prevent further fraudulent charges from appearing on your bill.

Signs of Modem Hijacking
  • Expensive long distance or international phone charges for calls you didn't make (usually dialed in the middle of the night).

  • Expensive charges for pornographic sites or chat lines.
I think there might be a web dialer on my computer. What do I do?
  1. Go to Internet Security for more information on web dialers and how to remove them.

  2. Contact your long distance carrier to notify them that you suspect web dialer fraud on your account. If Verizon is your long distance carrier, go to Incorrect Billing for more information on how to notify Verizon of the issue.
