Verizon FiOS Internet Service provides the same features as our Verizon High Speed Internet and requires similar equipment. It is the fiber optic technology and the speed that sets Verizon FiOS Internet Service apart.

How it works:

When you access the Internet, a fiber optic cable carries the laser-generated pulses of light to transmit the data signal to your home. Once the signal has arrived, an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) converts it to an electrical signal that is understood by your computer.

Your ONT takes all converted incoming information and delivers it to your router via an Ethernet cable. After the signal has passed through your firewall, the Ethernet cable carries the signal to the Network Interface Card plugged into your computer.

System Requirements

System requirements are a list of the minimum hardware and software resources your computer needs to work with Verizon FiOS Internet Service. There are two ways to find out if your computer meets the Verizon High Speed Internet requirements:

Check automatically
 Check manually

Check My PC

If you are viewing this page with the same computer that you will use with FiOS Internet, you can use the *Check My PC tool to check your computer automatically.

Check your computer manually to see if it is compatible with FiOS system requirements:

*The Check My PC tool may take a few moments to run, and is not compatible with Macintosh computers. If you are a Mac user, check your Mac manually.

FiOS Internet Equipment

Verizon Online provides and installs the equipment needed for your FiOS connection. This equipment includes:

  • Optical Network Terminal (ONT)

Translates the pulses of light that carry the data over the fiber optic cable into electric signals that are recognized by your computer.

  • Battery Backup Unit (BBU)
Provides up to eight hours of power in case your ONT Power Supply Unit is accidentally unplugged or in the event of a commercial power failure. The back-up battery is for voice service and does not supply power for Internet or video services.

  • The router

Provides the access point to the Internet and includes a firewall to help protect your computer from unauthorized access by hackers. Depending on when you subscribed to Verizon FiOS, you may have received a D-Link or Actiontec router.
