How do I view the header information of a message? Full headers include information such as the following:

Received: by pop02 (mbox jeremycxc)
(with Cubic Circle's cucipop (v1.31 1998/05/13)
X-From: fbukxxx@yahoo.com Thu Jul 8 22:08:01 1999
Return-Path: (fbukxxxx@yahoo.com)
Received: from smv18.iname.net by lmx07.iname.net

Depending on the settings, your email software might not display full headers by default. Set your email software to display headers before you view them.

To view email message headers

Outlook Express
  1. Highlight the message in the preview pane.
  2. From the File menu, select Properties.
  3. Select the Details tab. The header information is contained in the box on the Details tab.
Netscape Messenger
  1. Open the message.
  2. From the View menu, select Headers, then All.
  3. The full header contains lines beginning with Received. These are postmarks marking the servers through which the message has traveled.

Note the host names in the Received lines. Host names are the parts to the right of the @ sign in email addresses, names typically ending with .com or .net, such as hotmail.com, GTE.Net LLC d/b/a Verizon Internet Solutions, or aol.com. In most cases, the one in the last Received line (the line closest to the message body) is the originating ISP of the sender.
Microsoft Outlook 97 - 98:
  1. Open the message.
  2. Click View, then drag to Headers.
  3. Click Options.
