Why do I get millions of hits in my search? If you search using a single word, the search engine matches all pages with that one word. Narrow your search by adding words. For example, "recorder" returns the results you were looking for and many results you didn't expect. "DVD recorder" eliminates cassettes, video tape recorders and at least one musical instrument called a recorder, among other things.

Many search engines allow a search using phrases instead of individual words. Most search pages use double quotes around phrases. For example, a search for "sound barrier" ignores references to the word "sound" by itself (122,000,000 matches in one search) and the word "barrier" by itself (12,700,000 matches in another search).
