What is adware? Adware is software that displays advertising banners while a program is running. Instead of charging you for the software, the company generates revenue by selling the advertising space.

The company creating the software uses the information you enter in the registration form for general marketing purposes or targeting their advertising banners to your interests. Freeware or shareware downloaded from the Internet commonly includes adware as a hidden component.

Spyware takes this concept one step farther by tracking your activity on the Internet and then transmitting this information to a third party without your knowledge or consent. Rather than a single registration process to get personal information, spyware continually watches your activities and transmits the information to the designated party.

What can I do?
Pop-up blockers can greatly reduce the amount of adware that displays on your computer. Pop-up blocker software is available from many reputable sources and is often included in free toolbars provided by portal providers.
