How do spammers get my email address? Spammers gather email addresses from many sources, including personal home pages, mailing lists, and chat rooms. Some Web sites encourage visitors to provide their email addresses, and then they sell these email addresses to spammers. Also, computer programs have been developed that randomly generate email addresses that spammers use in hopes of getting their message to potential customers.

Before providing information about yourself over the Web, be sure to read an organization's privacy policy for specifics about how they might use your email address or other personal information that they collect. If a Web site doesn't have a privacy policy, or if the privacy policy doesn't explicitly guarantee that your personal information will not be shared, you should assume that any information you provide to that site could be sold to spammers or other direct marketers.

How do I prevent spam in the future?

Review a web site's privacy policy before providing information about yourself.

The policy outlines how they might use your email address or other personal information that they collect. If a Web site doesn't have a privacy policy or if the policy doesn't explicitly guarantee that your personal information will not be shared, you should assume that any information you provide to that site could be sold to spammers or other direct marketers.
How can Verizon Online help me with spam?

Use Spam Detector to prevent spam. This tool helps to filter spam before it reaches your Inbox. Spam Detector is automatically enabled when you set up your account during installation and begins filtering spam right away.

Report spam that reaches your Inbox. If you are using a spam-filtering tool and still receive spam email, please forward the entire message, with full headers displayed, to spamdetector.notcaught@verizon.net.
