Periodically changing your wireless network security settings Periodically changing your network's security settings is an important security measure that should be performed regularly if you are using WEP encryption. One of the weaknesses of WEP encryption is that it uses a static encryption key. You can compensate for this weakness somewhat by changing your network's SSID, WEP encryption key (if WEP is used) and your router or gateway password several times a year.

If you are using WPA or WPA2 encryption, it's less important that you change your network's security settings. Both WPA and WPA2 constantly change the encryption key, which provides greater security for your network.

Note: If you change your network's SSID or WEP key, you must update the SSID and WEP settings for all computers and adapters connected to your network.
