The Web page is showing an "X" where the Flash should appear. One of the new features of Windows XP SP2 is that you can enable and disable certain ActiveX controls, which are simply sets of rules describing how applications within your system will communicate. If your Flash ActiveX control is disabled and you browse to a page that includes a Flash-animation component, the animation will not be played, and you will see a yellow alert icon in the lower right corner of your Internet Explorer status bar. There may also be an alert message displayed in the security bar near the top of the browser window:

Your security settings do not allow Web sites to use ActiveX controls installed on your computer.

Solution: Enable the Flash ActiveX control. Follow the steps below to enable the ActiveX control that will allow Internet Explorer to display Flash animation.

  1. On the Internet Explorer menu bar, click Tools. Select Manage Add-ons.
  2. Select "Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer" from the Show drop-down menu.
  3. In the Name column, click "Shockwave Flash Object."
  4. Under Settings in the lower left corner of the dialog box, click Enable.
  5. An Add-on Status prompt will appear; click OK to enable your browser to display Flash animation.
  6. Click the OK button in the lower right corner of the Manage Add-ons dialog box when you have finished making your changes. You'll need to restart Internet Explorer for your new settings to take effect.
