What is a virus? A virus is a program written to change the way a computer operates, without your knowledge or consent. Viruses are usually distributed by email.

A virus changes the way your computer operates without your knowledge or consent. It can spread if you open an infected email attachment, download an infected file, or insert an infected CD or floppy disk into your computer.

The damage viruses can cause varies from minor annoyances to deleted files and corrupted critical data.

Viruses are programs that are often carried in other executable files. Executable files are programs, such as games or self-installing installation files, that start up when you double-click them. Windows screensavers are also executable files. Reputable companies check their programs for viruses before releasing them to the public. If you don't know the company that made a file in an email attachment, or you don't remember asking for the file, it's best to delete it.

Some viruses replicate by sending emails to everyone in the address book on a computer. If you get an email that doesn't look like it's from someone you know, it's best to delete the email and any attachments.
