What is an email address? An email address is a name or sequence of characters that is used to send messages to and from an email account at a specific destination on the Internet. Email addresses have an @ sign in the middle. The left side has a user's email name (often the user name of an account), and the right side has the name of an Internet service provider. For example, if you were sending an email to Jim, and Jim's user name was jim14768, and Jim's email provider is verizon.net, then Jim's email address would be jim14768@verizon.net.

Sometimes a department or group of people has access to a particular mail box, so the first part could also be a department or group name.
