Residential Phone Services Solution Center

Differences Between Traditional and FiOS Phone Service Verizon offers two methods of delivering telephone service: through traditional copper wire and through FiOS fiber optic technology.

If you subscribe to Verizon FiOS broadband, you likely receive FiOS phone service as well. However, if you are not sure, check your bill.

FiOS Phone Service may not be available in all areas.
Traditional Phone Service Telephone service is traditionally delivered through a pair of copper wires that run from the telephone lines along the road to a box on the side of your house called a Network Interface Device (NID). The inside wiring are a pair of copper wires that run from the NID to each phone jack in your house. Each multiple line requires a separate pair of wires running through your NID.

If you are a high speed Internet subscriber, your broadband service is provided over these traditional copper wires by sending and receiving data in frequencies not needed for audio phone conversations.
FiOS Service Verizon FiOS Internet Service uses fiber optic technology to deliver phone and broadband Internet service to your home.

This fiber optic technology uses strands of optically pure glass that carry digital information as pulses of light. With FiOS, hundreds of thousands of these strands are bundled together to make the fiber optical cable that is connected to your home.

When you access your phone or the Internet, a fiber optic cable carries the laser-generated pulses of light to transmit the data to and from your home. At your home, an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) converts it to an electrical signal in the appropriate way.

Verizon FiOS Internet Service may not be available in all areas.
