An entertainment and communications service business must continuously evolve and innovate in today’s competitive and dynamic environment. That is especially true with Verizon’s landline business, which is continuing a transformation begun several years ago with the introduction of our market-leading, fiber-optic based FiOS broadband communications and entertainment services. Cost controls are necessary with this evolution and, at times, so are increases to help offset the cost of providing the content and technology that entertains our customers at home or abroad. Since FiOS TV launched in late 2005, we have continuously upgraded our technology without a rate change to the TV equipment. Even though you may maintain the same equipment, Verizon routinely updates the technology that delivers the content to your set top boxes. The best is yet to come. We are working right now to build a more exciting product, with even more TV channels in HD and new equipment service options. To bring this level of programming and technology to you, we need to modify our rates. Your monthly bill will automatically reflect the new rate for the equipment you have. You should see the changes within 1 to 2 billing cycles after the new pricing goes into effect. You can review your current equipment and possible savings options with Equipment bundles at My Verizon. Miscellaneous Rate Changes Can you please tell me more about the Long Distance Surcharge? This monthly surcharge of $.49/line helps support programs such as Telecommunications Relay Services (TTY) and Local Number Portability. It also defrays other charges assessed by the FCC to telecommunications providers. Can you please tell me more about Inside Wire Maintenance Plan changes? This elective program provides a level of budget security should any kind of communications inside wire issue require repair or replacement, often saving hundreds of dollars of otherwise uncovered repair expenses. The fee adjustment represents a necessary part of the objective of keeping our customers at the forefront of the new features and new technology that make Verizon the best home entertainment provider in the market. In one incidence, we have discontinued the discount that we previously have provided on the optional Inside Wire Maintenance service for our copper-based customers, resulting in a $1 monthly fee increase. For FiOS customers, we have expanded the value of the program by covering all wiring in the home that delivers FiOS services (including copper phone wire, coaxial cable), also resulting in a $1 monthly fee increase. Can you please tell me more about the Federal Subscriber Line and Access Recovery Charge? The basis of these fees stems from historical mandates by the federal government that impose additional costs on Verizon’s operations or, in the case of the federal subscriber line charge, represent a cost recovery structure for network providers like Verizon and AT&T developed along with the deregulation of the long-distance market decades ago. Verizon is permitted to recover costs associated with the implementation of certain mandates, and the fees associated with access recovery and the subscriber line charge help Verizon pay for network costs or maintenance costs that help keep the network working effectively.
