Verizon Washington, DC

  • June 1883 - Chesapeake and Potomac (C&P) incorporated

  • December 1904 - 10,768 telephones in service in DC

  • October 1965 - Touch-Tone technology introduced

  • July 1969 - President Nixon's historic call to the moon-based astronauts began on C&P equipment

  • March 1976 - DC's first phone center opened on Good Hope Road in Southeast

  • April 1976 - The millionth telephone installed in DC

  • January 1984 - C&P changed to name to "Bell Atlantic"

  • January 1997 - Information Delivery for Education at Libraries and Schools (IDEALS) program launched

  • August 1997 - Bell Atlantic merged with NYNEX

  • October 1997 - First technology learning center opened in Adams Morgan

  • September 1998 - Students Educated for Economic Development Success (SEEDS) program launched

  • December 1998 - LeDroit Park project initiated, open house held

  • May 1999 - Visitor Information Center opened in the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center

  • June 2000 - Bell Atlantic and GTE merged to create Verizon Communications
