Nonprofit groups in Delaware received more than $699,000 from the Verizon Foundation in 2011. The majority of the funds went to organizations that focused on advancing health care, domestic violence prevention, education and sustainability. In addition, Verizon employees volunteered nearly 3,500 hours to nonprofit groups throughout the state. The Verizon Foundation supports employee volunteerism by awarding a $750 grant to a nonprofit organization when a Verizon employee volunteers 50 hours or more to the organization during the year. This annual event, a noncompetitive bike ride and walk to raise money to end the devastating effects of multiple sclerosis, is the largest organized cycling event in the United States, with nearly 100,000 cyclists participating in over 100 tours offered nationwide.

"The Cat in the Hat" Shares a Love of Reading with Wilmington Students
In celebration of Dr. Seuss' birthday in March, Ted Hendrixson, an employee in Verizon's Business Solutions Group, brought "The Cat in the Hat" to life for students in Pre-K through 1st grade classes at Wilmington's Immaculate Heart of Mary School.
