2007 at a Glance

150 nonprofit groups in Pennsylvania received nearly $2.2 million from the Verizon Foundation in 2007.

The grants have enabled the recipient organizations to improve basic literacy skills, create new and diverse approaches to technology-based learning, and help domestic violence victims rebuild their lives.

The Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon Communications and one of the largest corporate foundations in the world, awarded a total of $67.4 million in grants last year.

Verizon employees and retirees in Pennsylvania donated almost 40,000 hours and raised more than $1,135,000 for nonprofits while the Verizon Foundation matched approximately $927,400 through its matching gifts program.  Under the foundation's Verizon Volunteers initiative, one of the nation's largest employee-volunteer programs, company employees and retirees also contributed nearly 3 million hours of community service nationally since Verizon's inception in 2000 and provided $29 million in combined contributions through this program.

Promoting Literacy in the Keystone State

Literacy is the gateway to lifelong learning, personal opportunities and success. That's why one of Verizon Foundation's top priorities is to improve the literacy skills of children and adults. Our goal is to enhance student achievement by supporting strategic grassroots efforts that target improvements in reading and technology literacy and produce measurable results.

Check into Literacy

Check into Literacy Program

Twenty Pennsylvania nonprofit organizations received $240,000 in literacy grants from Verizon in 2007, thanks to our telephone customers in Pennsylvania. The "Check Into Literacy" program allows Verizon's residential and business telephone customers to support literacy in their home states by checking a box on their monthly phone bills. Customers who do so make a $1 tax-deductible donation to promote literacy throughout the United States. Verizon then distributes these donations to local literacy organizations. Some of the Pennsylvania recipients include:

Friends of the Hershey Public Library - $20,000
Delaware County Intermediate Unit - $25,000
Books for Kids, Erie - $  5,000
Beginning with Books, Pittsburgh - $10,000
York County Literacy Council, York - $5,000
Avon Grove Library, West Grove - $5,000
Oxford Public Library - $5,000
Union-Snyder Community Action Agency, Selinsgrove - $10,000
Philadelphia READS - $10,000
