Literacy is the gateway to lifelong learning, personal opportunities and success. That's why one of Verizon Foundation's top priorities is to improve the literacy skills of children and adults. Our goal is to enhance student achievement by supporting strategic grassroots efforts that target improvements in reading and technology literacy and produce measurable results.

Forty-Five Pennsylvania nonprofit organizations received $235,000 in literacy grants from Verizon in 2009, thanks to our telephone customers in Pennsylvania. The "Check Into Literacy" program allows Verizon's residential and business telephone customers to support literacy in their home states by checking a box on their monthly phone bills. Customers who do so make a $1 tax-deductible donation to promote literacy throughout the United States. Verizon then distributes these donations to local literacy organizations
