Answers:

What does the term “Frequency Migration” mean to MagnaStar customers?

The FCC has mandated that Verizon must vacate a portion of their current operating frequency to facilitate the re-use of that spectrum by other services. To ensure a smooth transition, Verizon has elected to complete this change in December 2007.  To guarantee uninterrupted service, MagnaStar customers are required to implement Teledyne Controls Service Bulletin No. 15 by December 21, 2007.

What does implementation of Teledyne Controls Service Bulletin No. 15 entail?

Service Bulletin No. 15 is a software-based change that will enable the MagnaStar unit to operate on a new set of pilot frequencies. The software is a front panel load that does not require removal of the equipment from the aircraft. This software is free of charge to MagnaStar customers, however, installation charges may apply. Please check with your authorized MagnaStar service provider. In accordance with the terms of this bulletin, this should only be done by Teledyne Controls, Raytheon Company, or a facility designated by Teledyne Controls. For more information, please call 1-888-246-STAR (1-888-246-7827).

Verizon previously advised that service was to cease in Dec. '06. Now it is stated that service shall continue "at least through" the end of '08. What is the final date and why has Verizon changed the date?

Due to overwhelming feedback from our general aviation customers, as well as our U.S. government customers, Verizon has elected to continue the service at least through the end of 2008 and perhaps beyond. We anticipated finalizing an end-of-service date by the end of 2007, at which point we were to formally notify our MagnaStar customers.  However, as stated on our home page and in a letter sent to our customers dated December 28, 2007, we are currently in discussions with LiveTV LLC to sell Airfone's business and operations.  The results of those discussions will determine whether or not we will end service on December 31, 2008, or continue operations beyond that date.  That information will be communicated via letter as well as via a posting on our MagnaStar website.  Verizon has licensed spectrum to operate the MagnaStar system until May 2010.  LiveTV purchased the rights to this spectrum and can operate indefinitely in this spectrum.

Please comment as to the level of service MagnaStar customers should expect.

With the exception of a change in Canadian coverage, the quality of service and network coverage will remain as it is today.

Will an alternate service provider be able to provide a similar service through the MagnaStar equipment I already have installed on my aircraft? Can Verizon recommend another service provider?

Verizon is not formally endorsing any of the alternate service providers that allow an interface into the MagnaStar equipment. We will continue to provide the high quality service our customers have come to expect at least through the end of 2008.

Why is Canadian coverage no longer available?

The network was reconfigured based on current traffic loading and license agreements. The aircraft based in Canada will function normally over the United States until at least December 31, 2008, provided it has been updated with Service Bulletin No. 15.

Will coverage over Mexico continue?

The license to operate in Mexican airspace and the air-to-ground network in Mexico are under control of TELMEX. Verizon is not in a position to provide any guarantee as to the continued availability of the TELMEX network.

Why were the minimum monthly rates increased in May 2007?

In order to maintain the quality and integrity of our network, we have found it necessary to modify the Monthly Minimum Service Charge.  Included in the new MagnaStar service plan is a proportional increase in plan minutes.
