The Internet is a critical necessity for businesses today. Verizon High Speed Internet for Business moves information and documents at a much quicker speed, saving valuable time and costs. You'll be on the Internet in no time, uploading and downloading larger files at faster speeds than dial-up.

What was once affordable only to large businesses with deep pockets is now priced right for small and medium-sized businesses. Verizon High Speed Internet for Business offers multiple speeds and affordable packages so you can choose the options that best meet the needs of your business.

Cable modems offer service over a shared cable, which means multiple users may be connected to the same local cable line. In contrast, High Speed Internet provides a dedicated connection to the Verizon Central office so your business doesn't have to share your local access connection with other users.

The major difference between High Speed Internet and dial-up is the speed at which documents can be downloaded. For example, downloading a 1 MB graphic file with a standard dial-up connection generally takes more than four minutes. But with High Speed Internet, the same file generally takes only about 25 seconds to download.

Verizon High Speed Internet for Business is a modem technology that turns your existing phone line into a three-channel data delivery system. One channel transmits voice and fax services, regardless of whether you are accessing the Internet. The remaining downstream and upstream channels carry information to and from the Internet. There are modems at each end of the phone line. One modem is in your location, while the other is in the telephone company central office. Working together, the modems provide a dedicated connection that avoids the need to dial-up for access. The modem in the Verizon Central Office points your Internet traffic to the network and on to the Internet. You just click on the desktop browser icon to get online.

High Speed Internet is designed to work with voice grade circuits over copper cable facilities, so it is not compatible with ISDN.

Many users still access the Internet via dial-up access, which requires an analog modem. Analog modems were designed to work on regular telephone lines and usually operate at speeds ranging from about 28.8 Kbps to approximately 45 Kbps. Even 56 Kbps modems do not transfer data at a full 56 Kbps. In contrast, High Speed Internet modems use higher frequencies to transmit information at faster speeds over the same copper telephone wire. Because the frequencies are different for voice and data transmissions, you can use the phone or fax while you are connected to the Internet.

An IP (Internet Protocol) address identifies a computer or other device on the Internet for the purposes of sending or receiving data. When a computer or device has a dynamic IP address, each time it accesses the Internet it will have a different address automatically assigned to it by your Internet service provider.

A Verizon Online representative will assess your company's needs and help you select the package that suits your business needs. Variables to consider include the type of files you transmit or receive, the amount of Internet users in your business, and how you use the Internet.

There are multiple download/upload speed packages available: 1.5M/384K, and 3M/768K. A 7.1M/768K package is also available in selected markets. Verizon Online cannot guarantee that the service will be uninterrupted or error-free, or guarantee the speed of service. The actual throughput (download) speeds you experience will vary and be lower than the connection speed after accounting for several factors, including the length and condition of your telephone line, the condition of wiring inside your location, computer configuration, network or Internet congestion and the server and router speeds of Web sites you access.

Whether you connect to the Internet using a 56 Kbps modem, High Speed Internet modem or another dedicated access service, the speeds you will experience will vary based on a variety of factors, including the following:

  • Length of your telephone line
  • Condition of telephone wiring inside and outside your location
  • Computer configuration
  • Network or Internet congestion
  • Server and router speeds of the Web sites you access
  • Other factors

A firewall is designed to guard your company's documents and systems. It protects your network from external threats, such as hackers. Firewalls typically include a combination of hardware and software elements, which separate a Local Area Network (LAN) from a Wide Area Network (WAN). This helps to prevent unauthorized access to the LAN through the use of electronic security mechanisms.

An IP is an address assigned by your Internet service provider (ISP). It is used to give your computer or other device access to the Internet. Some Verizon High Speed Internet for Business products use a dynamic IP address, meaning that your ISP assigns you a different IP each time you access the Internet. That IP is taken from a pool of addresses. Other Verizon High Speed Internet for Business products use one or more static IP addresses that are dedicated to specific customers. In addition to typical Internet browsing and downloading, static IP addresses can be used to host Web or email servers. Verizon High Speed Internet for Business with static IP enables customers to have up to 29 static IP addresses.

Both offer advantages to your business. You will require static IP addressing if:

  • You currently host, or plan to host, your own Web site, email or FTP server
  • You have a virtual private network (VPN)

If your business does not do these things, your best choice may be dynamic IP addressing.

Verizon High Speed Internet for Business provides you with a certain amount of bandwidth. With a wireless network, all of your computers share this available bandwidth. The wireless Gateway can technically support up to 253 computer connections with or without wire. The number of users and the complexity of applications being used can affect overall connection speeds. Because of this, Verizon Online does not recommend connecting more than eight computers to a single wireless Gateway or High Speed Internet line. If more than eight computers need Internet access, another High Speed Internet line and wireless Gateway are recommended.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Your current ISP-provided e-mail accounts, web space or web hosting, dial-up access accounts or other services such as PC security packages, may be cancelled at the same time you cancel your existing Internet Service.  Check with your current ISP for more information.
