Luge Challenge Q & A

Q: What is the Verizon Luge Challenge?

A: The Verizon Luge Challenge is a family event that brings the unique and exciting sport of luge to your doorstep. Participation in the Verizon Luge Challenge is free and no lift-ticket or experience is required. Coaches and athletes from the USA Luge National Team provide instruction on how to steer a luge sled down a track complete with curves and timing equipment. Participants have the opportunity to compete against other racers for exciting prizes courtesy of sponsors like Panasonic, LG, Columbia Sportswear and CW-X. Even those who opt to cheer on friends and family can get into the action by enjoying a live disc jockey, participating in prize drawings and sampling complimentary refreshments, all presented by Verizon!

Q: Who can participate in the Verizon Luge Challenge?

A: In order to participate in the Verizon Luge Challenge, you must be at least 10 years of age or older. Individuals under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult who will be required to co-sign a waiver. Advance registration forms for each event can be found on Luge Challenge Locations page or here. Due to legal reasons, waiver forms are not made available online and must be completed at the registration table the day of the event.

Q: When and where will does the Verizon Luge Challenge take place?

A: In its 12th season, the Verizon Luge Challenge will visit six mountains throughout the mid-Atlantic, New England and Pacific Northwest regions in February and March 2007. Due to the immense popularity of our event at Ski White Pass, Wash., we decided to make an additional stop at Mount Hood Ski Bowl as part of our west coast tour. Event dates and additional details are available at the Luge Challenge Locations page.

Q: How does it work?

A: Each day of the Verizon Luge Challenge is broken down into two sessions: morning and afternoon. The morning begins at 9:00am when registration opens inside the main lodge and in the Verizon Luge Challenge tent located on the mountain slope.

After registering, entrants proceed to the practice track where they receive instructions on steering a LaserLuge® sled from USA Luge National Team athletes and coaches. Participants utilize their newly learned skills to take a couple of practice runs down the track. Once comfortable, they are given the opportunity to qualify for the race by taking a run down the "Ultimate Slide," a luge track complete with banked curves and timing equipment (qualifying times depends on track conditions and vary from mountain to mountain).

Once a participant qualifies, they return to the Verizon Luge Challenge tent at 1:00pm for the Verizon Luge Challenge Race. Each athlete is assigned a racing bib and receives one timed run down the race track, which serves as their official competition time.

The event is divided into four racing categories:
  • Men 18+
  • Boys 10-17
  • Women 18+
  • Girls 10-17

The top three finishers in each category receive exciting prizes and are awarded medals by USA Luge National Team athletes in an Olympic-style ceremony, complete with podium

Family, fans, and friends can follow the action and are provided with cowbells and flags to cheer their athletes on. In addition to being broadcast on the mountain via loudspeaker, the race is also televised in real-time on a 65-INCH PANASONIC PLASMA HD TV inside the main lodge. No matter where you are, you'll be able to follow the action of the Verizon Luge Challenge.

Q: Why participate in the Verizon Luge Challenge?

A: Participants have the opportunity to compete against other racers for prizes such as Panasonic Lumix digital cameras, LG VX9800 cellphones, Columbia Sportswear, CW-X Performance Running Apparel, iPod Nanos and more!!!

As one of the highlights of our program, all adult winners from each mountain will be entered into a raffle to win a 65-inch PANASONIC plasma, high-definition television.
