John Doherty, who currently serves as chief financial officer for Verizon Services Operations (VSO), has been named senior vice president – Investor Relations, reporting to Verizon Chief Financial Officer John Killian, effective Sept. 2. 

Doherty will be Verizon's primary liaison with the investment community and Verizon’s shareholders.

Doherty had been responsible for finance operations and customer financial services, as well as overall financial support for VSO, a global, shared-services business group that operates Verizon’s wireline network as well as the finance operations, real estate and supply chain services that support all Verizon companies.

Prior to that, he was vice president of Strategy and Finance for Verizon Business, responsible for leading Verizon Business' overall strategy, business development, financial planning, and performance measurement activity.

In previous positions, Doherty was a vice president in the U.S. Telecom Finance organization, responsible for all financial matters for the Enterprise Solutions Group. He was also vice president and chief financial officer for Verizon International. During this period, Doherty led the rationalization of existing, non-strategic assets in Europe, Asia and the Americas. He served on the boards of CANTV, Verizon Dominicana, and the Puerto Rico Telephone Company.

Beginning in 1998, Doherty worked in Thailand as senior executive vice president and chief financial officer of TelecomAsia (TA), where he was responsible for finance, strategy, corporate development, marketing and sales, and customer care. Prior to joining TA, Doherty was executive director of Bell Atlantic International, responsible for developing the company's strategic alliances and joint ventures in Europe and the Americas. His previous experience includes his role in the U.K. with NYNEX CableComms, where he was responsible for strategy, corporate development, marketing and programming.

Doherty earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Stony Brook University, Long Island, and a master of business administration degree in finance from The City University of New York/Baruch College. He has also participated in the Wharton Executive Education Program at the University of Pennsylvania.
