System Engineer OSS Monitoring

 

Position Responsibilities:

  • Ongoing maintenance & administration of assigned systems
  • Adherence to policies, processes and procedures within your areas of responsibility
  • Assistance with execution of projects related to areas of responsibility
  • Document supporting policies, processes and procedures within your areas of responsibilities
  • Provide 2nd level support to our internal support staff and customers
  • Continue proficiencies on emerging technologies through self-study and internal training
  • Meet all internal certification standards for skill sets identified within your realm of responsibility
  • Available for after-hours critical escalations and project work as assigned
  • Execute the rollout of monitoring software updates
  • Execute the rollout of new and updated monitoring scripts
  • Identify, research, and resolve technical problems associated to monitoring systems
  • Respond to telephone calls, email and personnel requests for technical support associated to monitoring systems. Document, track, and monitor the incident to ensure a timely resolution
  • Engineer the installation of new software releases, system upgrades, and patch installs that resolves monitoring related software problems
  • Assists in the installation, maintenance, and general support of monitoring systems
  • Develop and update RTS documentation for assigned OSS applications and systems
  • Routinely review monitoring systems and services to ensure stability and security
  • Assist in interpretation of diagnostic data obtained from monitoring solutions
  • Provide escalation support to Implementation team for standard monitoring implementation
  • Provide implementation support for custom monitoring orders
  • Provide technical consultation to individual contributors and customers in areas of expertise
  • Provide Capacity, Performance and Availability reports for assigned systems
  • Define and recommend monitoring standards for fault-detection, availability, capacity and performance trending for assigned applications and services
  • Develop and distribute trend reports detailing availability, performance & capacity metrics for assigned applications and services
  • Engineer methods to optimize the availability, capacity, performance and cost of assigned applications and services
  • Analyze, define, develop, test and implement monitoring standards for platforms and applications utilizing relevant scripting languages

Required Skills & Experience: 

  • 3+ years of experience with technical knowledge of network management system, bandwidth management systems
  • 3+ years of working knowledge of Cisco, Force10, Brocade, switching and routing from a monitoring perspective
  • 5+ years of customer-service experience (service-industry or non-technical field acceptable) preferred
  • Bachelors or Associates degree required
  • Excellent documentation, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to efficiently prioritize and organize competing work demands with little oversight
  • Strong working knowledge of Internet networking technologies and principals including TCP/IP and DNS
  • Practical or educational background in development principles
  • Experience with enterprise class monitoring technologies, principles and systems such as HP Openview Network Node Manager/UNIX, HP Openview Operations Manager/UNIX, MegaSys Telenium/OpenVMS required
  • Experience with MRTG, Intermapper and/or Cacti/Linux preferred
  • Broad working knowledge of UNIX/LINUX, OpenVMS platforms and technologies
  • Working knowledge of Oracle DB preferred
  • Strong working knowledge of PERL, SHELL scripting and SNMP v1, v2c v3, SNMP MIBs, Event Definition, Trap Manipulation
  • Proven ability to work in both a team environment and independently
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communications skills
  • Exceptional troubleshooting and problem solving abilities
  • Superior project planning and management skills
  • Strong time and attention management skills
  • Strong attention to detail

Desired Skills & Experience:

  • Industry-related certifications (SCSA, RHCE, VCP, etc.) a plus
  • ITIL v3 Foundation certification preferred
  • Proven ability to absorb, master and leverage emerging technologies
  • Talent for creatively utilizing technology, people and processes to solve unique business problems in a cost-effective manner
  • Technical diagramming (Visio) and documentation capabilities
  • Experience with HP ServiceDesk is a strong plus
