ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) is a transport and switching technology that delivers high-capacity transmission at speeds of 1.5 Mbps to 155 Mbps to support voice, data, image and video traffic over the same network infrastructure. ATM uses a high-speed technology that bundles information into fixed segments called cells. It allows for one or more distinct Classes of Service (CoS) to be set up between any two locations. High bandwidth applications are high-speed with Global ATM. Its standards-based technology is suited for data-intensive business applications that require real-time transmision of voice, video and data among multiple locations.

ATM supports many different applications within an enterprise network, based on each application's bandwidth needs. This means Global ATM is ideal for user applications that require high bandwidth, fast and efficient transmission, scalability and low latency. ATM is an ideal solution for constant bit-rate traffic to support applications that need a constant flow of information and predictable transmission rates where delays and cell loss cannot be tolerated. ATM can run from the desktop across a LAN or WAN, or be used to interconnect LANs. Frame Relay/ATM internetworking allows for the development of hybrid networks by allowing Frame Relay traffic to be routed over ATM.
Key applications include:
- Full motion video
- Telemedicine and medical imaging
- Distance learning
- Multimedia communications
- Disaster recovery and data storage backup
- Internet and Intranet access
- Electronic funds transfer
- Electronic or desktop publishing
- Large file transfer
- Web-based marketing

- Increased network performance
- Faster switching and greater transmission speeds
- Verizon Enterprise Solutions network management and 24 x 7 network monitoring
- Reduced administrative expenses
- Flexibility and scalability - combine three kinds of traffic on a single network
- Improved network security and reliability
- A single point of contact for integrated, end-to-end global network services

Global ATM uses cell-switching technology to segment transmissions into fixed-length cells and is sent by virtual circuits over the switched network shared by many users. ATM establishes permanent virtual connections that maintain open communications between locations. Since voice, data and video traffic can be carried on the same network, the bandwidth utilization can be maximized because multiple applications can use the same network. This makes the network very flexible and cost-effective compared to a multi-network solution.
