Global Frame Relay Service: Real-time transmissions, multiple locations

What It Is
Global Frame Relay connects multiple locations over the public switched network. A fast packet-based technology, it carries data transmissions on a bursty or intermittent basis over fiber optic and digital circuits at speeds of 56 Kbps to 1.5 Mbps. Global Frame Relay combines the flexibility and management services of a public switched network with the high performance capabilities associated with private networks — at economical public network prices.

What its for
Global Frame Relay Service helps you move more data among more locations, while minimizing equipment needs and time spent managing your network. Global Frame Relay, used primarily for data transmissions, is well suited to handling distributed processing applications — such as client/server computing, peer-to-peer connections and Internet access. Global Frame Relay is also the ideal technology for establishing LAN-to-LAN connections and distributed client/server networks.

Applications include:

  • Local Area Network (LAN) connection and consolidation
  • Client/server networking
  • Medical imaging and file transfer
  • Data backup and restoration
  • Data processing and information management
  • Data connectivity between remote locations
  • Internet access and Corporate Intranet traffic
  • Global networking
  • Point-of-sale authorization

How you benefit

  • Bandwidth on demand — increased bandwidth and scalability
  • Easy maintenance and network management
  • Standards-based technology and proven reliability
  • Cost savings — flat rate, PVC-based pricing that matches your bandwidth needs
  • More efficient use of bandwidth
  • Handles both terminal-to-host and LAN-to-LAN connections
  • Flexibility and reliability — add or delete virtual connections to reconfigure your network as needed
  • A single point-of-contact for integrated, end-to-end network solutions

How it works
Global Frame Relay uses the public network to give you multiple pre-established paths through the Frame Relay network. Unlike leased lines that use physical circuits, Global Frame Relay uses Permanent Virtual Circuits (PVCs) that divide and transmit data in packets (frames) of variable length. The service pools and optimizes circuit capacity, so you pay only for the line capacity you use.

Global Frame Relay dynamically allocates frame relay resources in the most efficient manner on a packet-by-packet basis resulting in decreased in decreased network overload and less wasted bandwidth. It even streamlines your network and makes management easier by minimizing the number of interfaces, ports, terminal devices and circuits required.

As an added convenience, Verizon can help you manage your data network. Managed Data Network Services (MDNS) is Verizon's new family of data networking services — transport services, on-site equipment and resource management from one point of contact. MDNS extends network performance to the router and provides Web-enabled performance reports to identify and resolve trouble spots.
