The Environmental Policy is set forth by the CEO of Verizon, and is supported by the senior leadership team. We implement a comprehensive environment and safety management system that governs corporate activity which may impact the environment and includes monthly reporting to a senior level corporate governance body. We also have periodic reporting to the management audit committee of the board of directors. Periodically, independent audit firms evaluate our management systems and offer recommendations for improvement.

The executive vice president within Human Resources is our senior environmental manager. The Verizon environmental organization:

Sets Environmental Policy
Develops new environmental programs and initiatives
Conducts regulatory reviews
Implements practices to comply with regulations
Manages spill events
Remediates leaking tanks
Disposes of hazardous waste
Secures applicable environmental permits
Responds to Superfund inquiries
Coordinates Recycling Programs
Conducts compliance reviews

Operations employees are trained to recognize activities that pose potential environmental obligations or risk. Then, they contact our environmental organization to manage the activity. This compliance is part of our corporate Code of Business Conduct.

Periodically, we ask employees about their understanding of various corporate environmental requirements. We then summarize the findings and take corrective action when necessary.

In addition, Verizon uses only those contractors whose record demonstrates compliance with applicable safety, environmental, and transportation laws and regulations.
