Verizon's network uses the most fiber-optic systems of any other local or long distance company in the U.S. If all of the fiber-optic strands in our network were stretched out end to end, the total distance would be about 14.4 million miles, enough to circle the world 576 times.
All of the computerized call-routing system in Verizon's network use the latest digital-switching technology.
Those approximately 6,000 systems -- located from Maine to Maui -- have round-the-clock backup electrical power in the form of batteries and/or diesel generators. That means that even if an area loses commercial electric power in a storm, you will still have a dial tone.
Verizon has over 7,000 self-healing SONET fiber-optic rings. This advanced network architecture senses a break in the fiber "ring" and automatically re-routes voice and data calls in the opposite direction, so customers served by that ring don't ever know there's any network damage.
Verizon is the only major U.S. telecom company building fiber-optic links all the way to customers' homes, paving the way for the company¿s industry-leading FiOS Internet and TV services.
