Cutting Our Carbon Intensity: Energy Consumption

Cutting Our Carbon Intensity
Verizon’s commitment to reducing our environmental impact
CHALLENGE
Reducing energy consumption is not only vital to supporting the planet; it’s also a more responsible way for businesses to thrive. What if large organizations could better support their communities and reduce costs by accurately accounting for their carbon footprint? This was the igniting force behind Verizon’s carbon intensity initiative.
ANSWER
Verizon measures its carbon footprint by calculating the amount of carbon emissions required to move a terabyte of data across its networks. Verizon has implemented a wide range of green initiatives, including adding more alternative fuel and hybrid-engine vehicles to its fleet, deploying more energy-efficient network equipment, and encouraging customers to switch to paperless billing.
IMPACT
Since 2009 Verizon has been able to reduce its carbon intensity by more than 30%, and is working to cut it in half by 2020. Using smart building technologies, we’ve reduced energy consumption in 24 data centers by 4%, and we are designing greener and more energy efficient retail stores, helping us make positive strides toward our goal—and toward setting a solid example for large enterprises looking to embrace sustainable and greener energy protocols.
