A city collaborates to create the most environmentally sustainable urban core in the nation

CHALLENGE

We have always been energy dependent, but now we are becoming energy aware. The future of our world depends on protecting our vital resources, but how can we make reduced energy consumption a real and seamless possibility? That was the spark that ignited the unique public-private partnership between Verizon, Duke Energy, and the business and civic leaders of Charlotte, North Carolina.

ANSWER

The Envision Charlotte project has created “intelligent buildings,” where real-time data on energy consumption is gathered using smart meters and sensors and sent over the Verizon 4G LTE network to be displayed on interactive kiosks throughout uptown. This allows businesses and individuals to keep track of their energy usage and to conveniently see how much power they are consuming or saving via social media alerts.

IMPACT

Awareness is the first step toward any progressive movement. Attitudes in Charlotte are changing. The live data feeds encourage everyone to think about electricity as a valuable commodity and not an endless resource—at work and at home. Participants are taking responsibility for their individual role in consumption, and as a result, the people of Charlotte are providing themselves (and their children) with a greener and more energy-sustainable future.
