Sustainability: Community Impact

Helping to reduce the environmental impact of technological advancements in the communities we serve

CHALLENGE

Technology advances so rapidly in our world that we are quick to throw away the old and embrace the new. But what happens to our antiquated devices? It is a sad fact that less than 25% of all e-waste is recycled, which means that our landfills are being inundated with electronics that are comprised of heavy metals. These metals can leach into the soil and cause devastating harm to our environment—which is why Verizon decided to take action.

ANSWER

Verizon is committed to helping reduce the environmental impact of technological advancements in the communities we serve. In 2009, we launched our first Recycling Rally providing a free, convenient way for employees to recycle their personal electronics. In 2010, we opened the Rallies to the public and set a goal to collect 1 million pounds by the end of 2012. We recently surpassed our goal of 1 million pounds after completing more than 35 events around the country. We will continue hosting events around the country with a goal of collecting another million pounds by 2015.

IMPACT

This is only the beginning. Our projects are creating sparks in the mindset of the masses and progress is being made. Verizon employees worldwide are working toward a greener future and that is a powerful place to start. Through these recycling rallies and other programs supporting the communities in which we serve, we aim to make the world a better place—one project at a time.
