Switched Multimegabit Data Service (SMDS) to ATM/Cell Relay Interworking Service
Type of Change:
Switched Multimegabit Data Service (SMDS) is a fast packet services that supports LAN-To-LAN interconnection. ATM/Cell Relay is a broadband transport and switching technology used for transporting all types of telecommunications traffic including voice, video, and data. The SMDS to ATM/Cell Relay capability allows users to interconnect SMDS Subscriber Network Interfaces (SNIs) to ATM/Cell Relay User Network Interfaces (UNI's).
ATM/Cell Relay access to SMDS can be offered for speeds ranging between T1 and OC-3C.The customer subscribing to this service must have CPE equipment attached to the ATM UNI that supports AAL 3/4 and the SMDS to ATM interworking function as specified in the referenced docusment. The required CPE equipment can be an SMDS router plus a CSU/DSU or an SMDS router with an ATM card. The new service is transparent to the ATM/Cell Relay network.
ATM/Cell Relay access to SMDS is specified by the following:
ATM Forum BISDN InterCarrier Interface(B-ICI) Specification Ver. 1.1
