Step 4: Accessing shared network folders in Windows XP Once your setup is complete, you can access the folders on your home network that have been designated as shared. This can allow you to share documents between your desktop computer and your laptop. Digital photos can be shared between members of the family. Database records stored in a shared folder can be accessed by anyone on the network. Sharing folders is a very powerful concept with almost unlimited uses.
Note: You must configure Windows XP to access the shared folders on your home network.
To access the shared folders on your home network in Windows XP:
- Double-click My Network Places on your desktop.
- Note: If the My Network Places icon isn't displayed on your desktop, Windows XP isn't configured to access shared files.
- Double-click the icon of the computer with the shared folder you want to access.
- Navigate to the file you want to open just as you would if it were on your computer.
