    •  Connecting a netbook to a wired home network in Windows XP If you're using a modem and don't have a router or gateway, you can follow the instructions below to connect your netbook directly to the modem and access the Internet.

    You can also use an Ethernet cable to connect a netbook to your wired home network through a router or gateway. This allows you to connect your netbook and other devices to your network while taking advantage of the greater speed and security of a wired network.

    To connect your netbook to a wired home network using a modem:

    1. Use an Ethernet cable to connect your netbook to your modem.
      • Connect the Ethernet cable to a port on your modem that is labeled as a Data or Ethernet port.

      • Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to your netbook. The Ethernet connection may be on the back panel of the netbook. Other netbooks have a flap on the right-hand side near the back that covers the Ethernet port. Simply lift the flap and plug in the Ethernet cable.

    2. Once, you've connected your netbook to your modem, you're ready to test your Internet connection. Enter www.verizon.com in the address field of an Internet browser like Internet Explorer or Firefox. The Verizon home page should display. [Show Me]
