Bandwidth on Demand Trial -
FAQ

What is the Bandwidth on Demand trial?
Bandwidth on Demand was created to meet the demands of today’s customers who require the ability to offer high speed connectivity expeditiously.  The Bandwidth on Demand Just in Time Provisioning (JiT-P) trial is designed to reduce the provisioning time of private line OC-n and Ethernet services.  This will be accomplished by the use of Optical Transport Networks (an end-to-end all optical transport network including the loop and Interoffice Facility (IOF)) and Next Generation Add Drop Multiplexer (NGADM) network elements with control plane functionality.

What is Optical Control Plane?
Optical control plane is a distributed intelligence technology that enables the following key capabilities required in an intelligent optical transport network:

  • Accurate resource and inventory management
  • Dynamic call and connection management
  • Flexible and scalable deployment of new transport technologies
  • Flexible and multi-tier protection and restoration capabilities
  • End-to-end services across vendors and carrier networks

The implementation of Optical control plane is based on ITU-T G.807 and G.8080 architectural guidelines.

What private line services will be available with the trial?
Several private line service speeds will be available during the trial.

Global Wholesale has plans to introduce DS3 capabilities in the future.

What is the trial hoping to accomplish?
The Bandwidth on Demand trial was created to ensure the needs of our customers can indeed be met and exceeded.  The trial will test:

  • The functionality and the interactions of the Operational Support Systems (OSSs) working in conjunction with an intelligent control plane enabled transport network.
  • Prove system automation capabilities from ASR to circuit acceptance
  • Modification of procedures and practices are accurate
  • What happens with order fallout/circuits not provisioned

Where will the trial be conducted?
Verizon is conducting the Bandwidth on Demand trial in New York City.

What does the future hold for Bandwidth on Demand?
The Optical Control Plane technology provides a launching pad for several new and exciting future capabilities.  While these are still in the planning phases, we hope to launch these in the future:

  • Customer initiated hitless bandwidth modification for Gigabit Ethernet private line services
  • Scheduled provisioning and tear down Bandwidth on Demand and bandwidth modifications
  • UNI Service initiated via CPE signaling
  • Optical VPN (dynamic)
