Unbundled Dedicated DS1
A Verizon Wholesale UNE service offering that provides a high-capacity digital transmission path that is dedicated to the use of the ordering CLEC in its provisioning of local exchange and associated exchange access services. Learn more.

 

Unbundled Dedicated DS3
A Verizon Wholesale UNE service offering that provides a high-capacity digital transmission path that is dedicated to the use of the ordering CLEC in its provisioning of local exchange and associated exchange access services. Learn more.

 

Unbundled Dedicated Trunk Ports
A Verizon Wholesale UNE service offering; a switch termination on a Verizon switch (i.e., end office, Traffic Operator Position System [TOPS] or Operator Services Position System [OSPS]) dedicated to the use of the CLEC in its provisioning of local exchange and associated exchange access services. Unbundled Loop (Unbundled Local Loop Element or UL)
A transmission path that extends from a Main Distribution Frame, DSX-panel, or functionally comparable piece of equipment in the customer's serving end office to the Rate Demarcation Point (or network interface device, if installed) in or at a customer's premises. The actual loop transmission facilities used to provide an ULL may utilize any of several technologies.

 

Unbundled Network Element (UNE)
Specific equipment and facilities that are "unbundled" from traditional end-to-end services (such as residential dial tone service) in order to allow other local exchange carriers to use components of Verizon's network. An example of a network element would be a loop connected not to a Verizon switch, but to a competitor carrier's switch.

 

Unbundled Network Element-Platform (UNE-P)
A Verizon Wholesale UNE service offering that combines elements that can be used to build a variety of platforms. UNE-P is also known as 'platform'.

 

Unbundled Port
An interface (port) on a local switching system, that is not bundled with a loop or transport facility, that provides access to and from the switch and the functionality of the local switching system.

 

Unbundled Shared Trunk Ports
A Verizon Wholesale UNE service offering providing a switch termination that is used in conjunction with Verizon's unbundled switch and shared Interoffice Facility (IOF) transport infrastructure. See Unbundled Dedicated Trunk Ports. Learn more.

 

Unbundled Shared IOF
A Verizon Wholesale UNE service offering that provides routing for CLECs by using multiple interoffice transmission paths over non-dedicated facilities. Learn more.

 

Unbundled Subloops
A Verizon Wholesale UNE service offering that provides CLECs access to Verizon's copper distribution pairs and facilities. Learn more.

 

Unbundling
Term used to describe the access facilities that incumbent local exchange carriers must provide in order that other service providers may buy or lease portions of its network elements, such as interconnection loops to serve subscribers.

 

UOM (Unified Ordering Model)
Verizon's web services solution for real-time Access Service Requests (ASRs) processing.

 

Universal Resource Locator
An address on the World Wide Web. Known as URL.

 

Universal Service
This term describes the financial support mechanisms (a universal fund) that help compensate local exchange carriers or other communication entities to provide access to telecommunications services at affordable rates to rural, insular and other high cost areas, and to public institutions.

 

Universal Service Fund
see Federal Universal Service Fund.

 

Universal Service Order Code (USOC)
Three-to-five character alphanumeric codes found in the Service and Equipment (S&E) Section of a service order. These codes are used to describe a particular product, service or data element. (For example, the USOC "ESX" represents POTS call waiting.)

 

UNE
See Unbundled Network Element.

 

Unicast Address
An address that specifies a single network device.

 

Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP)
Four-pair wire medium used in the transmission of many different telecommunications protocols such as Ethernet, 10BaseT, and CDDI.

 

URL
See Universal Resource Locator.

 

Usage Charges
For CLECs using Verizon unbundled local switching, Verizon delivers end user usage data to the CLEC each Verizon business day via the Daily Usage File (DUF). The usage data includes a level of detail that enables the CLEC to bill each of its end users for telephone services.

 

Usage Returns
Usage records that Verizon has sent to a CLEC or Reseller and which the CLEC or Reseller has returned for one of the following reasons: incomplete record, invalid field, record misdirected, duplicate record, damaged information, or unreadable record.

 

User Network Interface (UNI)
The protocol defines connections between ATM end-stations and the ATM switch including signaling, cell structure, addressing, traffic management, and adaptation layers.

 

User Parameter Control (UPC)
Traffic policing to ensure that the defined peak traffic rate is not exceeded in the ATM switch.

 

USOC
