Custom Connect
Overview
The High Performance Connection
Expand your capabilities -- and your customers'. Custom Connect enables service providers to transport large bandwidths of voice, video and data services with fast and reliable connections. In addition, standard interfaces of Custom Connect improve speed-to-market deployment of new services that can increase your revenue.
Custom Connect is a SONET-based flexible transport service. SONET is a recognized industry standard for implementing a robust, survivable transport network. The defined protocols of SONET allow for ease of service interconnections and ensure a high quality service. Custom Connect offers highly flexible point-to-point connections or hubbing arrangements which allow for efficient aggregation of traffic from multiple locations.
How It Works
Custom Connect uses shared SONET-based self-healing interoffice fiber rings to transport high bandwidth traffic. Service protection inherent in SONET technology assures against service interruptions due to fiber failures in the local loops and interoffice facilities. In addition, Custom Connect offers survivability in the network by providing optional diverse fiber local loops and interface protection with a working and standby card in the equipment.
Custom Connect offers multiplexing capability at customer premises or Verizon central offices which allows for efficient traffic aggregation to meet your customers' business needs. Furthermore, Custom Connect offers standard electrical and optical interfaces ranging from DS1s, DS3s, OC3, OC12, OC48, and OC192 bandwidth capacity.
Benefits
- Custom Connect provides exceptional reliability and automatic traffic rerouting for ultra survivability without the cost associated with a dedicated private network.
- Custom Connect is a cost-effective, large bandwidth transport solution which enables you to offer customers more products profitably and gain an edge over competitors.
- Custom Connect offers flexible service configurations to meet your customers' needs.
- Custom Connect allows seamless connections of multi-vendor products while the synchronous structure simplifies the interface to digital switches, cross-connects and add/drop multiplexers.
Description
Custom Connect lets you capitalize on fiber optic technology now and into the future. It offers fast, high bandwidth, highly reliable transport of voice, video and data applications between two or more customer locations. Custom Connect is available in OC3/OC3c, OC12/OC12c, OC48/OC48c, and OC192 with the capability of dropping lower speed services from add/drop multiplexers.
Availability
Effective as of March 30, 2007, Verizon is grandfathering Custom Connect Service in its FCC Tariff Nos. 14 and 16 (Tariffs). Last year, Verizon received forbearance from certain common carrier regulation for several packet-switched broadband services, as well as non-TDM-based optical networking, optical hubbing, and optical transmission services (Forbearance). In accordance with this Forbearance relief, Verizon will now offer a service comparable to Custom Connect Service under a private carriage arrangement.
Following the grandfathering of Custom Connect Service in the Tariffs, if you wish to place any new orders for Custom Connect Service, you will need to enter into a private carriage arrangement with Verizon for a comparable service. Please note that DS1, DS3, E1, and STS1 rate elements of the Custom Connect Service are excluded from grandfathering as described in this letter, and such rate elements shall continue to be available to you under the Tariffs only.
Subject to certain terms and conditions, you may make certain additions and changes to your existing Custom Connect Service under the Tariffs. For a full description of all permitted additions and changes, if any, please refer to the Tariffs.

Pricing
Pricing for new orders of this service are handled on a contractual basis. Please contact us or call your account manager to discuss your particular needs.
Note: The terms and conditions of certain of the services described above are set forth in full detail in Verizon’s FCC Tariffs (Tariffed Services), while certain other services described above are provided on a private carriage basis (Private Carriage Services). For Tariffed Services, any summary of Verizon’s FCC Tariffs (Tariffs) set forth above is being provided for your convenience, but is not intended to provide a complete description of the terms and conditions of the Tariffs. You should not rely on this summary, and should conduct your own review and analysis of the Tariffs. Any failure or error by Verizon to fully or accurately set forth all relevant terms and conditions of the Tariffs shall not be deemed to bar Verizon from exercising its rights under the Tariffs. Notwithstanding anything to the contrary herein, the Tariffs shall govern over any inconsistent provision set forth herein. For all Private Carriage Services, the above summary is provided for your information and reference only. However, the actual terms, conditions, restrictions, limitations and the like for Private Carriage Services will be those set forth in the agreement between the customer and Verizon for such Private Carriage Service and shall govern over any inconsistent provisions set forth herein. All services are not available in all areas, and are subject to availability of facilities and equipment.

To provide exceptional reliability, Verizon usually deploys SONET in a ring topology. In the event of equipment failure or a cable cut, traffic is instantly routed to the protected path on a self-healing ring. The redundancy and protection inherent in SONET provides reliable, secure network without the cost of a dedicated private network.
Custom Connect's ability to transport large capacities over each pair of fiber makes the platform economical to implement. Carrying many signals of different capacities is accomplished by a byte-interleaved multiplexing scheme. This allows Custom Connect to carry existing hierarchies, such as DS1, DS3, STS1, OC3, OC12, OC48, and OC192 on the same pair of fiber. Custom Connect significantly increases the capacity across your network, capable of carrying up to 10 billion bits of data per second through synchronous transmission. The expanded capacity requires no additional fibers.
There are many benefits of Custom Connect's configuration flexibility and increased bandwidth availability:
- Equipment requirements are reduced.
- Provisioning of overhead and payload bytes allows individual management of the container that carries user data and facilitates fault sectionalization.
- Network reliability is increased.
- Asynchronous multiplexing format for carrying lower level digital signals, such as DS1 and DS3, is defined.
- Industry standards permit connection of multi-vendor products.
- The synchronous structure simplifies the interface to digital switches, digital cross-connect switches and add-drop multiplexers.
- The architecture accommodates future applications with a variety of transmission rates.
- Protection switching allows automated rerouting in the event of failure in the network.
Custom Connect offers exceptional reliability. Combined with 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week monitoring from Verizon's Network operations Center (NOC), any network related transport problems are proactively managed and virtually eliminated by Verizon.
