How Does DSL Work?

DSL provides a high-speed data channel over existing telephone lines. The channel extends from Verizon's serving wire center to the end user's location and from the serving wire center to an ISP's designated location. Your business and residential customers can use the same telephone line for DSL access and simultaneous voice or fax communications. This eliminates the need for a second line for Internet access.

DSL's asymmetrical characteristics are ideally suited to the needs of typical Internet users who usually require higher downloading speeds than uploading speeds. Most users download much larger files than they upload. DSL downstream (downloading) speeds are higher than upstream (uploading) speeds. For example, Verizon's DSL Infospeed 1.5M/128K package offers 1.5 Mbps downstream speeds and 128 Kbps upstream.
